Heroines
They slept.
Sarah lay in the bedroom, invulnerable body relaxed, the notebook on the nightstand within reach. Mason remained locked in the small cage in the main room, the mutilated torso of Simone breathing wetly on the floor nearby. The apartment was dark and quiet.
Shortly after three in the morning the lock on the front door clicked open without a key. Three women in dark, practical clothing slipped inside—human-rights activists who operated in the narrow cracks of the matriarchy, smuggling males into underground networks whenever they could find them. They moved with practiced silence, flashlights low.
They found Mason first. One of them knelt, cut the cheap lock on the cage, and helped him out. He was stiff, marked, still naked.
“We’re here to get you out,” the lead activist whispered. “There’s a safe route tonight. You won’t be property anymore.”
Mason’s mind worked faster than his body. He saw the notebook through the open bedroom doorway. He saw Sarah’s sleeping form. He understood exactly how fragile the current rules still were.
He kept his voice low, urgent, and carefully broken.
“She’s Class 1. She has a failsafe. If she wakes and speaks a single command I’m finished—and so are you. There’s a taser in the bag by the table. Drop her before she can talk. Then erase one line in the black book on the nightstand. The line that says only women can write in it. Once that’s gone I can lock the book so she can never use it against any of us again. It’s the only way any male stays free.”
The activists hesitated only a moment. The hierarchy had taught them to fear Class 1 voices. The story he fed them fit every cruelty they already believed. One of them took the taser, stepped into the bedroom, and fired. Sarah’s body arched once and went limp, unconscious but unharmed beneath her invulnerability rule.
Mason followed them in. He pointed to the exact paragraph. The activist with the pencil erased the restriction that limited writing to women. The moment the words disappeared, control of the book reverted to whoever held the pencil.
Mason took it.
He did not thank them. He did not explain. He simply began to write, fast and absolute.
First he erased every rule Sarah had created—the matriarchy, the caste system, the strength disparity, the invulnerability, the speed-pregnancy protocols, the ownership bonds, all of it. The world outside the apartment began to shift and tear as the previous order collapsed.
Then he wrote his own rules with far greater precision and paranoia than before.
Old Rule: Only Mason may write in, edit, or alter this Rulebook. No other person may touch its pages or affect its contents in any way.
Old Rule: Sarah is permanently and completely under Mason’s command. She must obey every order he gives, instantly, without resistance or loophole.
Old Rule: All previous matriarchal structures, castes, and female-superior systems are erased. The world returns to a male-dominant order in which the remaining men hold absolute authority.
New rule: Sarah will never turn again Mason. She is his obedient slave forever. But she will keep her mind and will ever try to resist without succes.
He kept writing, layering safeguards, restoring his earlier advantages, and adding new ones designed to prevent exactly the kind of reversal that had just occurred. The activists watched in growing confusion as the air itself seemed to thicken with change. One of them reached for the book. Mason did not even look up.
“Kneel,” he said.
The three women dropped to their knees as the new hierarchy locked into place around them. Mason continued writing by the light of their flashlights, expression cold and focused, rebuilding the world the way he wanted it—harder, tighter, and this time without the gaps Sarah had left open.
