Fate changes for them though when they fall asleep while working on a personal project to mix the power of Ai, with a Virtual Reality headset in a way that they would be able to adjust their perception of reality as though they were playing a game with mods and had access to the sliders. What actually happens as his system fries out while he is hooked up to it while he is sleeping is the Ai grants him the ability to ACTUALLY alter the world around him as stated before not just his perception.
